Yawns: Not so Lazy After All

Although my blog usually consists of technology, I thought I should inform my readers of "a new breed" of Gen Y and Gen X. They are called Yawns. An article from the San Francisco Chronicle claims that they live humbly, trying to lessen their carbon footprint in the world.

I decided to read the article since I had never heard of Yawns. After reading it, I think we all have a little Yawn in us. Yawn stands for Young and Wealthy but Normal.
They drive hybrid cars, if they drive at all, shop at local stores, if they shop at all, and pay off their credit cards every month, if they use them at all.
This is all good, I mean, at least they are environmentally-conscious. The Yawns are in their 20s, 30s, and 40s. I wanted to blog about this because I know many Gen Y's that didn't even know they were Yawns! The Green movement has been huge, and many people from our generation are happy to take part in it. Unfortunately, some people are "green" because it is trendy, but many are actually making an effort.

A consumer trends expert, Pan Danziger, believes that the green aspect of this has little to do with it.
"The green thing is just a small part of it," said Danziger, whose firm, Unity Marketing, has new research showing luxury spending is way down. "Americans have been on a buying binge for the last 10 years," she said. "Our closets are full. Our attics are full. Our garages are full. Enough already!
I have found this to be completely true in my parents house! My mom tends to overbuy and has an attic and two closets to prove it. I currently try to recycle or repurpose items so that I can cut down on my expenses. I donate many of my clothes and other items and try to limit my spending on things I don't really need.

Another point the article brings up are thrift stores. I absolutely love them. The amazing and unique clothing items you can find in a thrift can provide a day's worth of fun. When you buy things from these thrift stores, you are not only saving money, but also reusing items.

Secondhand stores are to Yawns what the Gap was to Yuppies.
Our Generation is emerging at a time of environmental awareness. I know many Gen Y's that try to live green and I think that we can have an impact. I hope everyone will realize that with small changes in lifestyle, we all can lessen our carbon footprint.

It's definitely slowly becoming the cool thing to be "green" these days. Popular daytime talk shows frequently have "green" advocates on their programs, thus making others want to "go green" so they can be like their favorite celebrity.

I agree--it sounds like we all have a little yawn in us. And that's not a bad thing!

Wow!!its nice to know that I'm a Yawn in the making. So many people in the younger generation are technologically advance than other generations who had to work for everything that they wanted or needed.

I feel that the older generation talks down on the newer generation because of their lack of hard work.

But my question for the older generation is why did you pave the way for the newer generation and frown upon the things that we do or don't do? After all we are the product of you just in a technologically advance world.

I don't think that it is such a bad think that going "green" has become a trend. In our century people tend to catch on to trends so easily. Why not let it be something good this time? More people are adopting because they see the celebrities doing it. It should be fine for more people to go green because they see the celebrities do it too. Why not jump on the bandwagon if it is something positive. It is hard to find positive in life these days.

At least going green is a trend that can help people. Maybe this is the way our generation can make the world a better place.

Now we just need a slogan.

Sometimes it really annoys me how commercial and trendy saving the environment has become. Back in the 60's being a hippie was a, excuse the pun, dirty thing. Now, environmentalist groups really know how to play to the American audience by trying to make it cool. It's not even just the saving the world thing. I have seen several "Save Darfur" shirt as well as Bono's "Red" campaign clothing. But at least all in all, people are becoming more Earth conscious.

I can't remember the name of it, but last year there was a world concert featuring artist from practically every major city on the globe. From what I understand, the campaign was to raise money to help clean up our world and to make people aware on how they can help. Right before each commercial and sometimes afterward there was tip on how to save water, electricity, etc. Quite frankly, the concept and the undertaking of such and event is amazing, but I kept wondering, how many people were just watching the musicians sing and how many were really into the cause?

Maybe these baby steps from our up and coming generation will eventually become gigantic leaps towards a better world.

This is definitely a good thing to be "copying". I agree that it's become a cool thing to "go green".

It's so funny, because now even during the Real World commercials, they have members of the cast giving you tips on how to recycle, and other things to help the world. The Real World! Crazy stuff.

I think the hybrid cars are pretty cool. I might actually get one in the future. Why not help the environment AND be cool all at the same time!?
